🚨 Bacterial contamination of drinking water in Utrecht – 125,000 households affected
As of November 1, 2025, a boil-water advisory will be in effect in parts of the province of Utrecht, following the discovery of the Enterococcus bacteria in the distribution network. Water company Vitens , one of the largest drinking water suppliers in the Netherlands, advises residents to boil tap water for three minutes before drinking or using it for food preparation.
📍 Affected areas
According to official information from Vitens and reports from NU.nl and RTL Nieuws, the boil-water advisory applies to, among others:
- Utrecht
- De Bilt, Bilthoven, Zeist, Bunnik
- Maarssen, Westbroek, Old-Zuilen, Groenekan
- And several surrounding villages
An estimated 125,000 households in total have been affected by this precautionary measure.
🔬 Which bacteria was found?
The infection involves a gut bacterium of the Enterococcus type, an indicator of potential fecal contamination . While this generally poses no significant risk to healthy individuals, the bacteria can cause gastrointestinal symptoms in vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and people with compromised immune systems.
⚙️ Measures from Vitens
Vitens immediately closed the suspected contaminated water reservoir and began flushing the pipe network . New samples are being taken daily. The boil-water advisory remains in effect until two consecutive tests confirm that the water is completely free of bacteria. Bottled water is being provided temporarily in some neighborhoods.
📅 Current situation
The boil-water advisory remains in effect on November 1, 2025. So far, no serious health problems have been reported, although some residents have experienced mild stomach upset.
💧 What we learn from this
This event highlights the importance of continuous bacteriological monitoring, even in countries with high drinking water levels. During maintenance work or pressure fluctuations, microorganisms can temporarily enter the network.
A gravity water filter with ceramic and activated carbon elements, such as the systems of Berkey effectively removes bacteria, coliforms, and enterococci. This ensures the water remains safe to drink even during such warnings.
